Navigating adolescence and young adulthood is tricky. Developmentally, around the age of 12, children enter into Erikson's stage of identity versus role confusion. This stage is all about social relationships, and teens begin to develop a sense of self and personal identity. Success leads to the ability to stay true to yourself, while failure leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self. In today's day and age, more challenges are presented to our youth than ever before when it comes to mastering self-esteem and self-worth. Young lives are constantly bombarded in the home, school, community and by the media. They receive messages of what they should look like, how they should think or feel, and much more. Because of strong social pressures and expectations, enormous pain can result when one's behaviors become incongruent with the formed identity and internal morals and values. Building self-esteem and increasing self worth enables young girls to make safe and healthy decisions.
Your Space Wellness is thrilled to be able to facilitate an 8 week therapy group for females ages 12-15 & 15-18. Each session utilizes a psycho-educational approach incorporating a social environment with a structured curriculum focused on the improvement of social interaction, self-esteem, and increasing self worth. A number of key themes will be introduced on a weekly basis including:
• Healthy interpersonal relationships with friends and family
• Healthy romantic relationships
• Healthy body image/eating disorders
• Expressing self to others/assertiveness training
• Social skill building
• Family and school problems (divorce, bullying)
• Mood issues and coping with stress
• Building self-esteem and self-worth
The group format provides girls with an opportunity to explore and understand common challenges with their peers in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Group unity allows members to recognize that their worries and concerns are shared by others, therefore their feelings become validated. The program is designed as a blueprint that allows group members to build-up their self-esteem and self worth on strong foundations. Having this foundation allows the girls to expand their sense of self and freedom, which ultimately will have a positive ripple effect throughout all areas of life.
In order to achieve optimal therapeutic results, groups will be capped at 7 members. Each group member will attend a private 1-hour intake session. The session is to assertion appropriateness for the group and identify specific issues, needs, and goals.
